The Whole Person Approach
The framework in action.
The Whole Person Approach is the practical application of the Whole Person Framework. It is a way of seeing, asking, and responding that honors the complexity of being human. Wellbeing isn’t one thing; it is the interaction of many parts of us.
From Understanding to Action
Person + Domains + Connections + Context + Time
See → Ask → Understand → Support → Try → Learn → Adjust
01
See the Person
Start by acknowledging the whole individual, not just the behavior or the presenting problem.
02
Get Curious
Avoid assumptions. Ask questions that open up the narrative instead of closing it down.
03
Look for Connections
Identify how different domains—physical, emotional, social—are influencing each other.
04
Consider Context
Understand the environment, systems, and history that surround the person right now.
05
Consider Capacity
Acknowledge that what someone can handle varies based on their internal and external resources.
06
Decide What Matters
Prioritize needs based on values and long-term wellbeing rather than immediate compliance.
07
Support Before Demanding More
Ensure safety and connection are present before asking for growth or change.
08
Try Something
Take action based on your new understanding, knowing it is a hypothesis, not a final answer.
09
Learn & Adjust
Reflect on what happened. Use the outcome to refine your understanding and try again.
What This Looks Like in Real Life
An Individual
Feeling chronically low energy and 'stuck'.
Instead of: 'Why am I so lazy?' We ask: 'How are my sleep, relationships, and workload interacting right now? What is my body trying to tell me?'
A Parent or Caregiver
A child is having big meltdowns after school.
Instead of: 'How do I stop the tantrum?' We ask: 'What was their sensory load today? Who did they connect with? What are they needing to release?'
A Child
Struggling with a new transition at school.
Instead of: 'Why won't they listen?' We ask: 'What developmental skills are being taxed? Does the environment feel safe and predictable?'
A Professional
Feeling detached and cynical about the work.
Instead of: 'Am I just not cut out for this?' We ask: 'How does the organization support my whole self? Where are the gaps between my values and daily tasks?'
The Approach Across My Work
Whole Person Staff Wellness
Interactive wellness education and coaching for educators, behavior professionals, caregivers, and helping professionals—because meaningful work shouldn't require sacrificing the person doing it.
What the Whole Person Approach Doesn't Mean
Integrating these domains does not mean perfection. It is not about doing everything all the time; it is about knowing which levers to pull when life feels out of balance. It is not a rigid set of rules, but a flexible orientation toward humanity.
The refusal to accept the surface-level story as the whole truth.
Curiosity
Acknowledging the common humanity in every struggle and every success.
Compassion
Moving with intention toward a more sustainable and whole way of being.
Action
See More. Ask Better Questions. Respond With Intention.
This approach isn’t just about health; it’s about life. When we look at the whole person, we find connections we didn’t know existed, and solutions that actually last. I invite you to explore, to question, and to join me in creating a world where every context and every domain of our lives is honored.
